Comparing IT Asset Inventory Categories
In IT organizations undergoing major transformation, it is not unusual to have at least 3 different groups looking at potential IT-related ‘inventory’ products:
– EA Project team is looking at EA Tools
– Service Management/Service Desk is looking at Configuration Management Databases (CMDB)
– Procurement Team is looking at IT Asset Management (ITAM) tools
The purpose of this document is to provide a high-level overview of the functionality of these three categories of inventories. This document is written for the non-technical reader. This overview is not comprehensive and specific products may have different strengths, weaknesses, features, functions, etc. The information contained herein is based on our observations and not formal research
At a high-level, these technologies may appear to have the same functionality but closer examination will show some very significant differences, for example:
– The detailed information maintained about a specific server in a fully implemented CMDB, in a complex organization, is 5-50x the amount contained in either an EA Tool or ITAM
Today, most organizations have a dedicated Desktop Management solution regardless of whether they own any or all of the above (although CMDBs can be expected to eventually compete here). There are numerous other applications in IT that also maintain similar types of IS/IT information including tools for monitoring, user access, chargeback, capacity planning, etc.
